HUMAN RESOURCES

HUMAN RESOURCES

The Human Resources department had informed her that they had scheduled a meeting with her for the next day. However, the topic was not disclosed. At first, she was surprised, and then she began to think. Could she be getting a promotion? Or perhaps a salary increase? She dressed smartly and arrived at the relevant person's office five minutes before the appointment time. Upon entering, she exchanged greetings with Mr. Ali, who greeted her with a forced smile. He seemed a bit tense and was taking deep breaths.

Zuhal had been at the company for three years. However, what would be discussed shortly would reveal that those three years had not been as productive as they seemed. Without wasting much time, Mr. Ali got straight to the point.

-        Ms. Zuhal, as you know, we have been working together for the past three years. Our institution's mission and vision are clear. As you know, In a demanding industry, we are struggling with big competitors.  Therefore, we strive to keep our employees constantly active and to perform better each day than the last. As we do every year, we reviewed the performance indicators this year as well. Unfortunately, we have not seen much difference between the day you joined and now. Of course, everyone puts in effort in their own way. However, when we examined the value added to the institution, we regret to inform you that we have decided to terminate your employment. Our colleagues will inform you about your personal rights and severance pay. Thank you for your efforts thus far.

Zuhal couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had very important reasons, in her mind, for being at this company. Her father and the boss were close friends. Because her father had once done a great favor for his friend, the boss couldn't refuse the request to hire her. For three years, Zuhal had been comfortably spending her time at this company, confident in her position. She disregarded working hours, turned her nose up at tasks, and even threatened to talk to her "Uncle Boss" if she faced any difficulties. People around her chose to work around her rather than confront her, considering it not worth the trouble.

The general manager appointed last year had reviewed everyone's job descriptions, scrutinized who contributed what, and initiated a serious separation process within the company. Zuhal, like everyone else, was aware of this situation, but due to her close relationship with the boss, she didn't pay it much mind. Now, however, she found herself face-to-face with someone trying to politely explain she had been fired.

-        Mr. Ali, do you realize what you're saying? Does Uncle Kerim know about this? You know you'd lose your job if he heard, right?

-        Ms. Zuhal, it's not possible for me to take such an initiative on my own. Based on the performance evaluations conducted on the general manager's orders, we are parting ways with some of our employees. You are one of them. Our boss, Mr. Kerim, is abroad. However, he is aware of your situation and has approved it.

-        I see! So the general manager saw me as a rival and his first move was to get rid of me. Of course he was scared, God knows how he told those above about me.

-        All the reports were prepared by me and my team in Human Resources, Ms. Zuhal. The decisions were made based on performance alone, without considering names. The names were revealed last and the approvals were obtained afterward. So, there was no pressure from our General Manager as you suspect.

Zuhal felt as if she had fallen off a cliff. She couldn't recall ever being so suddenly brought down in her life. She had been fired, completely unaware of her own shortcomings, purely based on her performance... For years, she had not been able to offer anything to justify being kept around. In this brief meeting alone, many reasons had been given for why she should leave.

She could no longer hear Mr. Ali, who was still trying to comfort her despite her negative attitude. There was an image, but no sound. Should she face reality, or should she search her mind for ways to justify herself? And there was also her father, to whom she would have to account at home.

-        …There is always a profession that everyone can succeed in and love doing, Ms. Zuhal. This place has been an experience for you. I sincerely hope you find a job where you will truly be happy and successful. Is there anything else I can assist you with?"

-        No, thank you. But I can't leave without saying that an injustice has been done to someone who truly loved this job. This company has made a great loss, just so you know!

She quickly left the room, went to her own office, packed her belongings in anger, and left the company without saying goodbye to anyone. For the next week, she constantly pressured the accounting department about her severance pay. She was paid more than she was entitled to. Her boss didn't call her father, and her father didn't call her boss. Knowing how his daughter behaved, this situation didn't come as a surprise to her father. He could only advise her to look for a new job immediately.

Zuhal, who kept her tail high at first, did not get the job because she could not find the position and salary she wanted, even though she had a few interviews. Of course, during this period, she constantly harassed his father to get her into a job. Months later, she started at a lower-paying place, but the firm rejected her without waiting for the two-month trial period. When she lost hope in the business, she  decided to open a cafe for herself . She opened the cafe she wanted, sometimes reproaching her father and sometimes being cute, but she still couldn't succeed. This time, as a boss, no one wanted to work with her. She eventually got married to escape the family's gratitude and divorced about nine months later.

Experiential Design Teaching says: “In this life, a person either takes on a burden or becomes one.”

Constantly expecting others to do things for you, to solve your problems, makes a person ineffective. Just as everything that remains stagnant gets dirty, so too does a person become corrupted and rusty if they remain idle. People who solve problems, who even consciously create problems and seek solutions, and who strive to do things better are always preferred. How few are those today who draw strength from within, who trust in their essence, who put effort into everything they touch, and who leave their mark with a reputation of, "They definitely did it!" As a result, people have begun to lose their essential resources due to simple, selfish interests when they could have achieved much more.

Good and bad, black and white, right and wrong, real and fake can be distinguished very quickly by everyone. These are not things that can be covered up with fancy sentences, a nice et appearance, good references.

So, which side do you want to be on?
